Meet our federal team at Space Tech Expo USA

We’re excited to announce our participation in Space Tech Expo 2024, which will take place from May 14 to 15 in Long Beach, California. As our collaboration with Space agencies strengthens, we’re looking forward to meeting our partners and customers on-site to discuss the critical topics for 2024: cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and open-source innovation.

AI/ML Solutions in Space

Space organizations invest heavily in AI, aiming to make interstellar travel successful. Agencies kickstart initiatives with different use cases in mind, such as mission planning, autonomous decision-making, resource optimization, and space debris control looking for tooling that enables them to run AI at scale.

Unlocking real-time space tracking with AI/ML supercomputing

Just recently we worked with the University of Tasmania and Firmus to unlock real-time space tracking with AI/ML supercomputing.

The University of Tasmania (UTAS) is among the leading providers of space tracking in the southern hemisphere.  The number of new satellites entering the Earth’s orbit is increasing at a near-exponential rate, exceeding 10% growth per year as of 2022, so the university’s work is critical. However, traditional CPU-based data processing had led to a bottleneck that prevented comprehensive, real-time object monitoring.

What UTAS needed was a modernised infrastructure that could support its immense data processing requirements without drastically inflating costs. The university’s solution was to migrate its space tracking software to Supercloud – a cost-effective and highly sustainable supercomputing platform from Firmus, built using Canonical OpenStack and Canonical Kubernetes, and capable of supporting the most data-intensive AI/ML workloads.

With Firmus supercomputing based on Canonical infrastructure, UTAS has successfully solved its data processing bottleneck. It has also positioned itself to be able to take advantage of additional MLOps tooling, such as Charmed Kubeflow, that can run on top of Canonical Kubernetes to further simplify AI/ML workflows.

“The UTAS project will help fill the global shortfall in space tracking coverage, and will improve the safety of orbital infrastructure and secure the future of space missions. We are pleased to play our part by contributing Firmus compute resources to support much needed real-time space tracking”. — Peter Blain, Director of Product & AI, Firmus

Explore the case study here.

To provide the most complete AI solutions to Space agencies, we’ve partnered with the leading hardware, silicon and cloud providers, such as NVIDIA, DELL, AWS, Google Cloud, HPE, Intel, Azure and more.

Sending the artwork to the International Space Station

In 2022, we teamed up with Lonestar to send artwork to the ISS. The artwork is part of a global STEAM initiative and a groundbreaking, immutable data storage, edge processing demonstration currently running aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and led by stealth start-up Lonestar, open-source leader Canonical, and leading space mission integrator Redwire Corporation, a leader in space infrastructure for the next generation space economy.

Cybersecurity with Ubuntu Pro

Open source technology has been used in space technology for years and it is no surprise that cybersecurity is a key concern for the industry. With our commitment towards securing open source, last year, we announced the general availability of Ubuntu Pro subscription.

It secures an organisation’s Linux estate from OS to the application level. Pro is available on-prem, in the cloud and air-gapped environments, automating security patching, auditing, access management and compliance. Ubuntu Pro delivers FIPS compliance and automation for security standards such as DISA’s Ubuntu STIG, and CIS hardening via the Ubuntu Security Guide (USG).

One of the growing concerns for 2024 is application security. Many open-source packages for applications and toolchains exist in a space with no guarantee or SLA for security patching. With Ubuntu Pro, we secure over 23,000 + open source applications.

If the topic sounds interesting to you, schedule a meeting with our Federal Director Kelley Riggs, for an in-person discussion at Space Tech Expo.

OVHcloud and Nextcloud’s commitment to customers: data that stays your data

19 avril 2024 à 09:00
OVHcloud at Enterprise Day

OVHcloud is a returning sponsor of Nextcloud Enterprise Day – Nextcloud’s annual enterprise event for like-minded industry professionals and decision-makers to get the most out of their Content Collaboration Platform.

By supporting Nextcloud Enterprise Day, OVHcloud reinforces its position as a cloud provider that values privacy, security, and open-source standards, offering solutions that empower organizations to maintain control over their data while leveraging the benefits of cloud technology.

At last year’s Enterprise Day 2023, OVHcloud’s CEO, Michel Paulin, underlined this ambition in his virtual speech:

For 20 years, OVHcloud has been dedicated to building an open and trusted cloud, upholding fundamental values centered on trust, data protection and innovation. Our commitment extends to partnering with entities that reflect our principles. We take immense pride in our strong partnership with Nextcloud. Sharing similar values allows us to collaboratively propose innovative solutions.”

– Michel Paulin, CEO OVHcloud

About OVHcloud

OVHcloud, a global cloud computing service provider, offers scalable and flexible web hosting, server, private and public cloud solutions for businesses, developers and individuals. With a commitment to data autonomy and transparency, OVHcloud enables efficient IT infrastructure management while advocating for privacy and innovation.

A powerful partnership

Grounded by a strong and solid technology partnership, Nextcloud and OVHcloud work on interesting joint cooperations. Nextcloud users can easily integrate dedicated AI services from OVHcloud in Hub 6 and 7 and OVHcloud clients have very simple access to install cloud services from Nextcloud on their OVHcloud infrastructure.

Since their founding, Nextcloud and OVHcloud share a plethora of shared values and the following aligned principles:

Open-source philosophy

Nextcloud is built on open-source software, allowing for transparency, flexibility, and community collaboration. Similarly, OVHcloud supports open-source initiatives, as seen in the five core values of their SMART cloud, and contributes to various open-source projects. This shared commitment to open-source values fosters innovation and empowers users and developers alike.

Data sovereignty pioneers

Both Nextcloud and OVHcloud are at the forefront of the data sovereignty vision, advocating for a world where the public sector, businesses and individuals alike have access to all their data with a high level of data security. While Nextcloud emphasizes self-hosting options, giving users more control over their data and enabling them to comply with regulations like GDPR, OVHcloud implements robust security measures across its infrastructure and data centers, ensuring the safety and privacy of customer data. We envision a world where users won’t have to worry about the interference of any extraterritorial laws like the U.S. Cloud Act that pose substantial risks to European’s personal data.

Further demonstrating our dedication to this vision, in 2021 Nextcloud filed an antitrust complaint with the European Commission about Microsoft’s anti-competitive, bundling behavior. Later that year, together with a coalition of some 30 NGOs and other European tech companies, we publicly called on the EU to take action and we haven’t stopped there.

OVHcloud also takes a firm stance on data rights, with their CEO Michel Paulin stating, “EU policymakers should have the courage and intellectual honesty to establish a sovereign cloud as well as to regulate American cloud service providers under the EU’s antitrust Digital Markets Act regulation.”

Our powerful partnership has the potential to enact change in establishing a level playing field for cloud service providers and a data-sovereign cloud for all.

GDPR compliancy

Ensuring GDPR compliance is paramount for both Nextcloud and OVHcloud as we both prioritize data security and privacy in the EU. With a strong commitment to adhering to local laws and regulations, both of our companies go the extra mile to safeguard user data within the EU.

OVHcloud’s local data centers are a testament to their dedication to compliance with GDPR requirements.

Scalability and Flexibility

Nextcloud and OVHcloud both offer scalable solutions tailored to the needs of businesses and individuals. Nextcloud can be deployed on-premises or in the cloud, accommodating various use cases and organizational sizes. OVHcloud provides scalable cloud infrastructure with options for custom configurations, enabling users to adapt their resources as their requirements evolve.

A history of alliance

While Nextcloud and OVHcloud operate in different niches within the cloud computing landscape, our shared values of data security, privacy, openness, scalability, customer focus, and innovation unite us in our mission to provide reliable and user-centric cloud solutions.

Accordingly, we partner at major events and tech conferences together like at the leading IT security event, it-sa in Nuremberg, Germany. It-sa provided us the platform to talk about our secure and sovereign cloud collaboration in a large audience of IT leaders and participants from around the world.

The Open Trusted Cloud (OTC) initiative

The Open Trusted Cloud, or OTC, program aims to build vibrant ecosystems of software publishers – SaaS and PaaS companies around an open, reversible, secure, transparent and trusted cloud. Started by OVHcloud and joined by Nextcloud in 2022, we share common values about compliance with local data regulations and data sovereignty.

The Open Trusted Cloud is an ecosystem of European software manufacturers and puts the European offer effectively in the spotlight – a structure with a common voice that conveys our messages clearly. To strengthen their position, software manufacturers should work with other European players together. By acting together, we can increase the impact and share costs.”

– Khaled Allab, director of the Open Trusted Cloud

We’re also both members of the CISPE (Cloud Infrastructure Services Providers in Europe) association, with OVHcloud being a founding member, that aims to standardize the rules for personal data protection throughout Europe. In addition, we’re both members of the German GAIA-X project, a European initiative for developing an efficient, competitive, secure and trusted data infrastructure for the European Union.

Join Canonical Data and AI team at Data Innovation Summit 2024

Canonical is delighted to be a technology partner at the Data Innovation Summit (DIS) in 2024. We are proud to showcase our Data and AI solutions through our conference talk and technology in practice sessions. The event will take place in Kistamässan, Stockholm on April 24-25, 2024. Visit us at booth C71 to learn how open source data and AI solutions can help you take your models to production, from edge to cloud.

Data and AI: get first-hand insights from Canonical experts

The modern enterprise can use AI algorithms and models to learn from their treasure troves of big data, and make predictions or decisions based on the data without being explicitly programmed to do so. What’s more, the AI models grow more accurate over time.

The magic is in the melding of AI and big data. Data of incredible volume, velocity, and variety is fed into the AI engine, making the AI smarter. Over time, less human intervention is needed for the AI to run properly; in time, the AI can deliver deeper insights—and strategic value—from the ever-increasing pools of data, often in real time.

In today’s competitive business environment, your AI and data strategies need to be more interconnected than ever. According to an MIT Technology Review survey, 78% of CIOs say that scaling AI to create business value is the top priority of their enterprise data strategy, and 96% of AI leaders agree. Nearly three out of four CIOs also say that data challenges are the biggest factor jeopardising AI success.

The Data Innovation Summit is a significant event in the field of Data and AI, especially in the Nordics. It brings together professionals, enterprise practitioners, technology providers, start-up innovators, and academics working with data and AI. We at Canonical are delighted to announce that we will be participating in this event and sharing our expertise in Data and AI.

Canonical is a well-known publisher of Ubuntu, which is the preferred operating system (OS) for data scientists. In addition to the OS, Canonical offers an integrated data and AI stack. We provide the most cost-effective options to help you gain control over your Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), and ensure reliable security maintenance, allowing you to innovate at a faster pace.

Canonical DIS talk: open source DataOps and MLOps

Canonical data and AI Product Managers, and Andreea Munteanu and Michelle Anne Tabirao will be speaking about open source for your DataOps and MLOps.

Talk description

Open source data and AI tools enable organisations to create a comprehensive solution that covers all stages of the data and machine learning lifecycle. This includes correlating data from various sources, regardless of their collection engine, and serving the model in production. Together, DataOps and MLOps drive the collaboration, communication, and integration that great data and AI teams need, making them essential to the model lifecycle. DataOps is an approach to data management that focuses on collaboration, communication, and integration among data engineers, data scientists, and other data-related roles to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of data processes. MLOps is a set of practices that combines machine learning, software development, and operations to enable the deployment, monitoring, and maintenance of machine learning models in production environments.

In this talk, we will explore how to build an end-to-end solution for DataOps and MLOps using open-source solutions like databases, ML and analytics tools such as OpenSearch, Kubeflow, and MLFlow. Professionals can focus on building ML models without spending time on the tooling operational work. We will highlight some use cases, e.g. in the telco sector, where they use MLOps and DataOPs to optimise the telco network infrastructure and reduce power consumption.

Attendees will learn about the critical factors to consider when selecting tools and best practices needed for building a robust, production-grade ML project.

Come and meet us at DIS 2024

If you are interested in building or scaling your data and AI projects with open source solutions, we are here to help you. Visit our Data and AI offerings to explore our solutions.
