Mozilla Devs Adding ‘New Tab Wallpapers’ to Firefox

Par : Joey Sneddon

Mozilla devs are bringing more customisation options to the new tab page in Firefox. A number of modern web browsers, including Google Chrome, allow users to set a custom image as the backdrop for the new tab page: As the new tab page is (by default) set to show when a browser is launched and every time a new tab is opened it’s a highly visible (if often fleeting) part of users’ browser experience, making customisation a popular request. But while Mozilla Firefox offers an array of advanced features and settings that put it on a par with rival browsers […]

Firefox Nightly is Now Available for Linux on ARM64

Using Linux on a 64-bit ARM device and longing to use Firefox Nightly builds? Well, you’re in luck — Mozilla has finally made ARM64 Linux builds available to download. As I understand it most Linux distributions that support ARM64/AArch64 offer a native ARM version of Firefox in their repos (in Ubuntu that’s via snap) though some Linux ARM distros only offer Firefox ESR, which is a long-term support version lacking newer features. It’s not been possible to get Firefox for ARM64 directly from Mozilla itself. But that’s changing. When Mozilla launched its own APT repo bringing DEB versions of Firefox […]

Mozilla Firefox 125 Released with Added Conveniences

You know the drill by now: a new month rolls around, and a new version of the inimitable Mozilla Firefox rolls off the release server for us all to enjoy. And bang on cue, Firefox 125 has arrived. The big-ticket new feature in this update is URL paste suggestions: Mozilla says this feature “provides a convenient way for users to quickly visit URLs copied to the clipboard in the address bar of Firefox.” How does it work? If you copy a URL to the system clipboard and then focus the URL bar (in Firefox 125, that is) you will see […]

Firefox Getting Translate Selected Text Feature, Here’s How to Try It

Par : Joey Sneddon

A handy new translations feature is in the works for Mozilla Firefox that should help speed up translating short snippets of text from one language to another. Firefox 118 introduced a privacy-respecting web page translation feature, and Mozilla devs have continued to improve on it in subsequent releases But sometimes you don’t need or want to translate an entire web page just a portion of text on the page. Plus, given that Firefox translations take place locally to preserve privacy the task of translating every bit of a text visible on a web page can be a little on the […]

Mozilla Firefox 124 Released with Minor Changes, Linux Fixes

Mozilla Firefox 124Mozilla Firefox 124 is now officially available to download. The latest update to the open-source web browser includes a small clutch of improvements. Firefox View can now sort open tabs by recent activity (default) or tab order making it a touch faster to find specific tabs using this feature; and Firefox’s built-in PDF viewer now supports caret browsing mode for improved accessibility. The Firefox snap package for Ubuntu saw a regression in native messaging portal support (used by some web extensions, including the GNOME Shell extensions doohickey) in the Firefox 122 release. It took some time by the bug is […]

Silverfox is a Classic Chrome Theme for Firefox ESR

Par : Joey Sneddon

A new open-source nostalgia project lets you turn back the clock on web browser aesthetics. Silverfox is a custom theme for Mozilla Firefox ESR — a long-term support version of the famed browser — that recreates the classic look of Google Chrome from 2012. We’re talking trapezoid tabs, parallelogram new tab button, a pared back speed dial, bottom-based download bar, a custom-built hamburger menu (wrench icon optional), and Chrome’s classic (if tiny) window buttons (the browser didn’t use native GTK window controls until 2017). “Browsers age, good design doesn’t”, say the creators of this effort. Speaking as someone who blogged […]

Firefox 123 Released with Better Gamepad Support on Linux

Mozilla Firefox 123A new stable version of the Mozilla Firefox web browser is available to download. Mozilla Firefox 123 buffs the browser’s privacy-respecting translation feature. Now when you translate a web page the browser also translates text shown in tooltips (i.e. titles) and any placeholder text shown in form controls/fields/search boxes. Address bar settings are now listed in the Settings > Search section. From here you can choose the kinds of results the address bar ‘suggests’ for queries you enter, e.g., browsing history, bookmarks, open tabs, shortcuts, and search engines. Talking of access, Firefox 123 adds a search bar to Firefox View […]

Mozilla Announces Layoffs, Renews Focus on Firefox

Par : Joey Sneddon
13 février 2024 à 23:38

Mozilla, makers of the Firefox web browser, is the latest tech company to announce layoffs. The non-profit says it is scaling back development on a number of projects and, as a result, 60 employees (roughly 5% of its total workforce) will lose their jobs. Among projects TechCrunch reports Mozilla has earmarked for cutbacks is its Online Footprint Scrubber — a paid-for feature announced barely a week ago! Mozilla VPN, Relay and other privacy products are also being scaled back, with the company of the opinion those products don’t offer much differentiation with competitors, and are struggling as a result. The Mozilla.social […]

Firefox Devs Working on Tab Preview Feature

Par : Joey Sneddon

Tab Hover in Firefox web browserTab previews are in the works for a future release of Mozilla Firefox. In current versions of Firefox you hover your mouse over a non-active tab (i.e. any tab other than the one you’re currently viewing) to see (after a small delay) a tooltip containing the web page title. Handy, especially if you have a ton of open tabs, including several from the same site, and aren’t able to see enough of the page title in the tab itself to know which page is where. But in the latest Firefox beta builds Mozilla developers are experimenting with a major enhancement […]

Firefox 122 released with official DEB for Ubuntu

Par : Joey Sneddon

Mozilla Firefox logo with the version number 122 text behindMozilla Firefox 122 has been officially released, with an official Deb package debuting alongside it. Yes: there’s now an official Firefox Deb package for Debian-based distros, including Ubuntu. This gives users a safe, reliable way to get the latest version of their browser should (for whatever reason) they not want to use a repo, Snap, Flatpak, or PPA builds. Last year Mozilla launched their own dedicated apt repo to make it easier for Debian, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, etc users to install Firefox Nightly builds and, more recently, Developer Edition and Beta versions. Then adding a stable build feels like a […]
